A couple of weeks ago I went to Kate's house in Maryland to help her catch up with some work around the house. When I got there Kate wasted no time in showing me what she had in mind: cleaning up her basement.
But it wasn't all work and no play for us. After each hard day's work we made a big pot of popcorn balls and watched a video. Great fun!

We started by cleaning, preparing, then painting the walls using a water seal paint with 2+ coats.

Erin helped Kate & I load up the truck for a trip to the thrift shop. We also took a truck load to the landfill, which was quite an experience. I wished I had brought my camera. The landfill was a big hole in the middle of mountain composed of about 50% dirt and 50% garbage. Sea gulls filled the sky and the ground. They constantly barely defied death under the treads of mini-bulldozers which were busy pushing the stuff to and fro. The stench was incredible!
After getting a good start on the work, we took a day off to go the Renaissance Festival. There were Renaissance style shops and entertainment held in a pretty wooded area. Everyone working the festival wore period clothes and spoke with an Old English accent. Here Kate enjoys a treat from Ye Olde Funnel Cake Shoppe.
There were skilled artisans and craft shops of all kinds. We both liked these hammock chairs. They were very comfortable and cost $99 each. Being a couple of penny-pinchers, we only took the time in them that we could get for free. Ahhhhh!
Part of Kate's idea for home improvement was to try to find a piece of furniture that would both store and attractively display her stock of weaving yarn. This cube of cubes piece we found at Ikea perfectly fit the bill. The 3-pocketed storage rack on the side, the colorful flower pot on top and the large basket also on top all store less attractive tools for weaving. We found these at Ikea also.
An unexpected find at Ikea was this attractive CD rack. We put it up in Kate's room. This made it possible to remove an old, large, dark-colored plastic CD tower. Along with moving the yarn out of the same room, this created a nice feeling of spaciousness.
With Mark's help we moved these large, very heavy wooden cabinets down to the basement. Kate replaced all the stained, damaged, and missing ceiling tiles. She purchased an area rug and we set up the basement as a reading and game area. It turned out great!
When I got home at the end of an exhausting week, it was nice to be greeted by an enthusiastic welcoming committee.

That's all Folks!
