June, 2002

Last month, on May 12 Kate & Jude left their respective homes to meet in Seattle, Washingon and begin a two week tour of the Pacific Northwest.

The first place on their list of places to see was Seattle itself. They were prepared for the rain. On their way to Pike Place Market, a famous colorful outdoor market bustling with fish vendors, flower peddlers, artists, and crafters, they came to a wall covered with wads of gum. It was a bit disgusting but also rather artistic looking.

After doing some shopping and more site seeing, they took the monorail to the Space Needle, the 605 ft tower built for the 1962 World's Fair. There they ate a delicious seafood dinner at the revolving restaurant on top. Kate had been anxious to visit the nearby and weirdly shaped Music Museum but unfortunately it was closed.

The next day they took the state operated ferry through the beautiful San Juan Islands in Puget Sound to Orcas Island. They were to spend two days at the B&B called Blackberry Beach in the small town of Olga.

The B&B had a wonderfully landscaped backyard with huge blooming rhododendrons and lilacs. There was an interesting gate down to the beach and a neat birdhouse. All this plus a magnificent view!
Their second day on Orcas, Kate & Jude went to Moran State Park. There they hiked several shorter trails before tackling the 4.4 mile Little Summit Trail on Mount Constitution, the highest point in the San Juan Islands. According to the guidebook, the trail passed through one of the largest stands of lodge pole pines in the area. Their effort was rewarded with magnificent views. At the highest point of the trail, Kate took the opportunity to center herself with a yoga stretch. At the peak of the mountain there is a stone tower that provides a 360-degree view of the San Juans, Vancouver Island and the Cascade and Olympic Mountain ranges. Incredible!

The next day they took another state ferry toVancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Their first site was the incredibly beautiful Butchart Gardens. There they saw a variety of different theme gardens, fountains, pathways, and all kinds of flowers in bloom. Jude has never seen so many colors and types of tulips. Inspiring!

After spending the day at the garden, they headed south on the island to the very scenic city of Victoria.

Come back later. There's more to come!
